In recent years, an increasing number of companies within the EU startup ecosystems have put data at the core of their business models. However, with an increasingly saturated market and tighter regulations, these companies are facing significant barriers to both entry and scaling opportunities.
In order to overcome these difficulties and help data-driven startups to thrive, TNW together with the Data Market Services Consortium, a European Commission sponsored project, will support 50 companies per year with a series of training in legal support, fundraising, and providing a wide range of entrepreneurial opportunities.
Furthermore, together with gaining in-depth training, the selected companies will become members of a European tech network in which leading investors and high-level public servants are already part of.
This is a three-year program, with startup calls opening at the beginning of every year until 2021.
According to the European Data Market final report, the EU-28 data market has had a growth rate of 9.5% between 2015 and 2016, reaching an overall value of over €54b in 2016. The worldwide big data technology and services market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 23% between 2014 and 2019. Additionally, the worldwide revenue for big data and business analytics has been forecast to increase more than 50% from almost $122 billion in 2015 to more than $187 billion in 2019.
Despite this flourishing market, there are various barriers and gaps within the European data industry that may inhibit future growth. These include:
TNW, along with other eight organizations - Zabala Innovation Consulting, Ogilvy Worldwide, University of Southampton, Iptector Consulting Aps, ERCIM/W3C, Bright Pixel, Spherik Accelerator, and Spinlab Accelerator - has joined a European Commission-backed Horizon 2020 programme to empower data-centric European start-ups and SMEs. With its long-established expertise in the startup ecosystem, TNW will provide extensive support to selected companies in reaching their ambitious goals.
Top applicants will be selected for the programme and will receive the support they need through participating in the training of their choosing which will cover topics like investor relations, GDPR, and data protection. Importantly, early applicants will get a chance to be selected to participate in the TNW Conference in Amsterdam taking place in May 2019 with the 1st of April being the cut-off point for early selection.
